For Alex as Managing Director of Back to Front Exterior Design; a family business based in Surrey specialising in transforming ugly houses into beautiful homes; the undertaking for the couple was not a daunting one but one with endless possibilities.
Along with all the design work, the couple took on a lot of the physical work too, with Alex acting as project manager and Toby doing much of the building work with help from day rate employed trades and friends. Working at nights and weekends they finally met their goal of transforming the unloved house into a beautiful, contemporary yet country living style home in early 2017.
One of the key considerations for Alex in transforming their home was making sure they selected the correct style of windows to help add character back into the house and for the couple wood was the only choice.
“I have believed for many years that the windows and doors are the eyes of a house and can make or break a project. The choice of material and manufacturer for us was vital to ensure the products not only looked right but were hardwearing, low maintenance, had sensible manufacturing guarantees and had top eco credentials. Windows are one of the most economised spends on a project, with many people opting for cheaper PVC-U, mainly because of the perceived added benefit of low maintenance, but it comes at a significant environmental cost and in terms of real savings, can also be a false economy. Not to mention potentially catastrophic for the look of the building.”
In working with Bereco for clients of Back to Front Exterior Design, Alex knew our timber windows and doors well and knew that there was no other option for her own house than our Traditional Flush Casement with Farrow & Ball colour matched paint finish.

Alex and Toby didn’t stop there they also chose grey warm edge spacers to compliment the Farrow and Ball Moles Breath painted windows and doors further reducing already low U-values to improve the overall insulation value of the property.
Before the dust had even settled with the renovation the neighbouring properties owners fell in love with the windows and doors and have since had the same Bereco products installed in their own home, matching the two semi’s and lifting the look of the whole street.
