The truly stunning Glentruim Castle is situated near to the rivers Spey & Truim close to the village of Newtonmore in Invernesshire, Scotland. Located at the gateway of Caingorm, Britain’s largest National Park, the surrounding breath taking scenery can be seen from all aspects of the castle.

Dating back to the early 1840’s, the castle was originally built by Major Euan Macpherson and today is a privately owned holiday retreat, offering luxury self catering accommodation.

The beauty and grandeur of the castle makes a striking impact on the surrounding landscape so any renovation works had to be sympathetic to its character. A W Carpentry worked with the client on the replacement of the original timber windows and doors during the recent refurbishment of the castle.

Why Bereco?
Having previously supplied windows for a cottage on the Glentruim Estate and with Deirdre, the Estate Manager, being so impressed with the result; Bereco were the only choice for the renovation of the castle itself.

The Heritage Range, offered the ideal solution to complement the historic appearance of the 18th century castle whilst offering 21st century performance.

The SlimLine double glazed units featured offer increased U-Values to improve energy efficiency whilst retaining the appearance of traditional single glazed windows and the experienced design technicians at Bereco were able to offer assistance with U -Value calculations and design bespoke products to meet the specific requirements of the project.

Interesting Fact

Impressively, the total refurbishment of the castle took just 1 year from start to completion. Glentruim has all the modern facilities expected of a luxury holiday retreat; the basement of the castle features a state of the art cinema, gym and spa area for guests to enjoy.

Special Requirements

As with all listed buildings, great care had to be taken with every aspect of the refurbishment of the castle and had to comply with the strict conservation requirements of Historic Scotland.

An energy survey of the castle concluded that significant heat was being lost through the old single glazed timber windows. It took 18 months to gain approval from Historic Scotland for the single glazing to be replaced by Bereco SlimLine specialist double glazed units to increase the U-Values, making them more thermally efficient.

It was an essential requirement that the aesthetics of the replacement windows were as closely matched to the original single glazed products as possible. This meant that bespoke products were required to retain the period aesthetics and look of single glazed windows whilst offering improved thermal performance.

“I am delighted by both the quality and the appearance of the Heritage Range products supplied by Bereco. They further enhance the appearance of Glentruim Castle and from an environmental and economical point of view the addition of Bereco SlimLine double glazing will most certainly save energy and reduce our heating bills each year.”
